Description
Systematic position. Caryoborus serripes is a beetle species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Bruchidae (seed beetles). It is recognized as a specific pest specialized in colonizing and consuming the seeds of palm plants, which makes it a significant concern for both botanical collections and the nursery industry.
Host plants and damage. The pest primarily targets seeds of various Arecaceae species. Its economic impact is observed when infested seeds lose their germination potential, leading to significant losses in agricultural imports and horticultural collections of rare palm varieties.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle begins when an adult female deposits eggs on the seed coat. Upon hatching, the larva bores into the seed, where it spends its entire developmental period feeding on the endosperm. This concealed lifestyle allows the pest to survive during long-distance transportation of infested seeds.
Nature of damage. Infestation is often hidden until the adult beetle emerges, creating a characteristic circular exit hole. Inside the seed, the embryo is often consumed or damaged, which leads to total failure in propagation.
