Gleditsia seed beetle

Caryobruchus gleditsiae

Description

Systematic position. The Gleditsia seed beetle (Caryobruchus gleditsiae) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Bruchidae family. This species is a specialized pest that feeds exclusively on the seeds of certain leguminous trees, significantly affecting both natural forests and seed storage facilities.

Host plants. The primary host for this beetle is the honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos). The pest infests the pods while they are still developing on the tree, and the infestation often continues post-harvest in storage environments, leading to the destruction of the embryo within the seed.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult females lay eggs on the surface of the pods. Upon hatching, the larva bores into the seed, where it spends its entire larval stage consuming the endosperm. Once fully developed, it pupates inside the seed before emerging as an adult through a characteristic hole.

Damage and economic impact. The larval activity causes internal destruction of the seed, effectively turning the seed coat into a hollow shell. This damage is often irreversible, causing massive losses in seed viability. In nurseries and seed banks, the Gleditsia seed beetle can compromise a large percentage of the germination potential, leading to significant economic losses in silviculture.

Control measures. Integrated management is essential to mitigate the impact of this pest:

  • Regular phytosanitary inspection of all seed lots intended for storage or distribution.
  • Sanitation of storage facilities to remove and destroy infested debris and waste.
  • Fumigation of seeds using approved chemical agents to eliminate internal larvae.
  • Cold storage treatments, which can suppress the development and reproduction of the beetle.
  • Early harvest of pods before the adult beetles have an opportunity to emerge and spread.
