Description
The palm borer (Castnia linus) is a destructive pest belonging to the Castniidae family within the order Lepidoptera. While often confused with butterflies due to their appearance, these insects represent a significant threat to palm tree cultivation across tropical regions.
The primary hosts of this pest include various species of palm trees, most notably coconut palms. The larvae are notorious for their boring behavior, which makes them difficult to control, as they remain shielded within the plant tissues for most of their development.
The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female lays eggs near the base of palm leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae bore directly into the trunk or leaf stalks, where they feed on the internal tissues, ultimately creating elaborate galleries inside the plant.
The economic damage caused by Castnia linus is significant. The boring action disrupts the plant's vascular system, leading to wilting, yellowing of leaves, and structural instability of the trunk. Heavily infested trees often become susceptible to secondary pathogens and may collapse under stress.
