Description

The giant palm borer (Paysandisia archon) is a large day-flying moth belonging to the Castniidae family. Originally native to South America, it has become a severe invasive threat to palm trees across Southern Europe and beyond. Its larvae are highly destructive, as they bore deep into the trunks and stalks, often killing the host tree within a few seasons if left untreated.

The biology of this pest is characterized by a hidden development cycle. The adult female lays her eggs on the bark or the base of the palm's crown. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately tunnel into the soft tissue of the palm. They spend their entire larval stage inside the plant, feeding on the trunk fibers and growing significantly in size before reaching the pupation stage.

A wide variety of palm species act as hosts for the giant palm borer. Common garden and landscape palms, including Trachycarpus fortunei, Phoenix canariensis, Washingtonia filifera, and Chamaerops humilis, are particularly susceptible. The insect does not discriminate based on the age of the tree, although younger palms are often more rapidly killed by the extensive internal damage.

Identifying an infestation is often delayed because the larvae operate deep within the tree. Early indicators include the presence of sawdust-like frass at the base of the tree, distorted or shredded new leaves emerging from the crown, and small entry holes in the stem. As the internal damage compromises the tree's vascular system, the palm begins to wither, showing signs of severe dehydration and nutrient deficiency.

To combat Paysandisia archon, arborists recommend a combination of preventive and curative actions:

  • Regular visual inspections of the palm crown for signs of larval frass.
  • Deployment of pheromone traps during the flight season to disrupt mating.
  • Systemic insecticide applications, often through trunk injections for better penetration.
  • Biological control using entomopathogenic nematodes to target larvae within tunnels.
  • Sanitary pruning and destruction of infested plant material to reduce local population density.
