Telchin (genus Telchin) represents a group of moths belonging to the family Castniidae. Known primarily as significant pests in tropical and subtropical regions, these insects possess specialized morphological traits that allow them to inhabit and thrive within the stems of host plants. Their impact on specific agricultural sectors, particularly banana cultivation, makes them a subject of intense study for crop protection specialists.

The primary host plants for Telchin larvae include species within the Musaceae family, specifically bananas and plantains. These larvae are stem-borers, meaning they spend the majority of their development cycle protected inside the pseudostem or the rhizome of the plant. This internal habitat makes them particularly challenging to manage compared to external leaf-feeding pests.

The biological lifecycle follows a holometabolous process: eggs are laid on the plant surface, followed by the hatching of larvae that immediately bore into the plant tissue. As the larva grows, it continues to feed on the internal fibers, creating extensive galleries. This feeding behavior disrupts the vascular system of the plant, significantly hindering nutrient and water transport, which eventually results in reduced fruit quality or total plant collapse.

Damage assessment is often delayed because internal infestation rarely shows external symptoms until structural integrity is compromised. Growers typically look for signs such as sap exudation, frass (larval waste) at the base of the plant, or uneven development of the banana pseudostem. In advanced stages of infestation, the risk of wind damage increases significantly due to the weakened state of the infested stem.

Control strategies for Telchin require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. The primary defense involves rigorous monitoring of the plantation to detect early signs of larval entry. Chemical control measures using systemic insecticides can be effective if applied during the adult flight stage or at the very onset of larval activity. Furthermore, field sanitation, which includes the removal and destruction of infested plant materials, is essential to prevent the spread of the population to neighboring healthy plants.
