Telchin licus

Telchin licus is a significant moth species belonging to the family Castniidae (castniid moths) within the order Lepidoptera. Known primarily as a destructive borer of sugarcane, this insect is native to the Neotropical regions, where it poses a constant threat to commercial sugarcane plantations.

The host range of this pest is primarily restricted to sugarcane and some related wild grasses. Unlike external leaf-feeders, the larvae of Telchin licus exhibit an endophytic behavior, boring into the stalk of the plant. This internal habitat provides the larvae with protection from environmental factors and, crucially, from many traditional contact insecticides.

The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. The life span of the larval stage is relatively long, as the caterpillar needs sufficient time to complete its development while feeding on the fibrous internal tissues of the sugarcane stem. Pupation occurs within the tunnel created during the larval stage, often close to the exit point for the emerging adult.

The damage caused by Telchin licus is primarily manifested through the weakening of the plant structure. Tunneling activities destroy the vascular bundles of the sugarcane stalk, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients. Consequently, infested plants show stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and increased susceptibility to lodging during strong winds, ultimately leading to significant sugar yield reductions.

Integrated pest management (IPM) for Telchin licus requires a multifaceted approach:

• Strict sanitation of harvest residues to eliminate overwintering pupae hidden in stubble.
• Augmentative biological control, utilizing parasitoids and pathogens targeting larval stages.
• Monitoring adult flight peaks with pheromone-based traps to time the application of interventions effectively.
• Field rotation and the use of resistant cane varieties where breeding programs permit.
• Application of systemic pesticides during high-risk infestation periods to suppress early-instar larvae.
