Spurge hawk-moth

Systematic position: The Spurge hawk-moth (scientific name Celerio euphorbiae, often classified as Hyles euphorbiae) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Sphingidae. These moths are characterized by a streamlined body and high-speed flight capabilities, making them efficient colonizers of various habitats.

Host crops: While primarily associated with members of the Euphorbiaceae family, the larvae can also feed on various horticultural crops, including grapevines. In agricultural landscapes, they can cause localized outbreaks that threaten the health of young vineyards and nursery stock.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves a complete metamorphosis through egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult stages. The species typically overwinters as a pupa in the soil. Adults emerge in spring or early summer to mate and lay eggs, which hatch into larvae that undergo several developmental instars.

Damage and harmfulness: The larvae are voracious leaf-eaters. They consume leaf tissue aggressively, often leaving only the main veins. High populations can cause significant defoliation, which severely stresses the host plant, impairs its ability to store nutrients for the winter, and ultimately leads to reduced agricultural yields.

Control measures: Management strategies emphasize cultural practices and targeted chemical interventions. Mechanical soil cultivation in late autumn and early spring helps to expose and destroy overwintering pupae. During the growing season, if larval populations exceed economic thresholds, authorized insecticides should be applied.
