The bedstraw hawk-moth (Celerio gallii), also classified as Hyles gallii, is a member of the Sphingidae family within the order Lepidoptera. While often noted for its size and flight agility, this insect can occasionally act as an agricultural pest. Understanding its life cycle is essential for managing potential infestations in horticultural and field environments.
The primary damage is caused by the larval stage, or caterpillars. Although they typically feed on wild host plants like bedstraw (Galium) and willowherb (Epilobium), they may opportunistically feed on various cultivated plants including grapevines and garden shrubs if their natural habitat is disturbed or if the population density is high enough to cause food competition.
The biological cycle involves pupation within the soil. Adults emerge in late spring or summer to mate and lay eggs on the leaves of host plants.
