Description
Systematic position: The genus Cephonodes belongs to the family Sphingidae (hawk moths), order Lepidoptera. These insects are well-known for their clear wings and ability to hover while feeding on nectar, resembling hummingbirds. However, the larval stage is characterized by significant herbivorous activity.
Host plants: The most significant species from an agricultural perspective is Cephonodes hylas. It is a notorious pest of coffee plants (Coffea species). Additionally, it can infest various ornamental plants from the Rubiaceae family, such as Gardenia and Ixora, causing localized economic losses in nurseries and plantations.
Biology and life cycle: The moth undergoes a complete metamorphosis involving four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs individually on the undersides of leaves. After hatching, the larvae go through five instars of intensive feeding before pupating in the soil or leaf litter. The generation time varies depending on environmental temperatures.
Type of damage: Damage is caused by the larval stages. The caterpillars are voracious feeders and can strip entire branches of their foliage, leaving only the midribs of the leaves. Severe infestations lead to significant defoliation, which severely stresses the plant, reduces fruit production, and, in severe cases, can lead to the death of young plants.
Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Cephonodes populations. Strategies include constant field monitoring for early detection of larvae, manual removal in small garden settings, and the application of biological control agents like Bacillus thuringiensis. When infestation levels are high, targeted chemical treatments with insecticides should be applied according to local agricultural regulations.
