Ceratina, commonly known as small carpenter bees, belongs to the family Apidae. While these insects are often recognized for their pollination services, their nesting behavior can cause significant mechanical damage to various plants. Unlike colonial bees, they are solitary and seek out specific environments to raise their brood.
These insects primarily affect plants that possess pithy or hollow stems. Common hosts include raspberry, blackberry, roses, and various herbaceous perennials. They select stems that are easy to excavate, making agricultural and ornamental plants particularly susceptible to their nesting activities.
The biology and lifecycle of Ceratina involve the excavation of tunnels within plant stems. The larvae complete their development within these protective tunnels before emerging as adults.
