Ceratomia is a genus of moths belonging to the family Sphingidae, commonly known as sphinx or hawk moths. These insects are native to North America and are recognized for their distinct physiological characteristics, including stout bodies and narrow wings. While they are often appreciated by entomologists, certain species within this genus are known to be significant defoliators of forest and ornamental trees.

The primary host plants for Ceratomia larvae include various deciduous tree species, most notably elm, linden, and ash. The caterpillars are voracious feeders, and during peak population density, they can strip entire branches or small trees of their foliage. This extensive feeding behavior is what classifies them as potential pests in managed landscapes and nurseries.

The life cycle of Ceratomia follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths typically lay eggs on the undersides of leaves. After hatching, the larvae go through several instars, consuming large amounts of leaf tissue. Pupation occurs underground, where the insects spend the winter months, making the soil-dwelling pupae a critical stage for both survival and potential control efforts.

The primary symptom of infestation is significant leaf loss, often starting from the edges and progressing until only the major veins remain. This defoliation causes physiological stress to the host tree, leading to reduced growth, susceptibility to secondary pests, and in severe cases, the decline of the plant. Monitoring foliage during late spring and summer is essential to detect early larval activity.

  • Cultural control, such as tilling the soil under host trees to disrupt pupal overwintering sites.
  • Biological control through the application of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), which targets larvae while sparing beneficial insects.
