Systematic position: The red deer (Cervus elaphus) belongs to the order Artiodactyla and the family Cervidae. In an agricultural and forestry context, this species is classified as a large ungulate herbivore that can cause significant damage to crops and tree plantations when population densities are high.
Biology and life cycle: Red deer are highly adaptive social animals with seasonal behavior patterns. They typically exhibit strong dietary shifts throughout the year. During winter, when natural woodland browse is scarce, deer frequently encroach upon agricultural lands to feed on overwintering crops, seeking high-energy food sources to survive the cold months.
Affected crops: Red deer pose a threat to a variety of vegetation, including winter cereals (wheat, rye), oilseed rape, and sugar beet. In forestry and orchards, they are known to graze on young shoots and buds, while also stripping bark from saplings and mature trees, which can devastate newly planted forest stands and ornamental orchards.
Nature of damage and economic impact: Damage is manifested by direct grazing, which reduces crop biomass and yields. In forests, bark stripping (debarking) causes deep wounds, disrupting the cambium layer. This leads to reduced wood quality, tree deformities, and increased vulnerability to secondary infections, such as fungi and wood-boring insects, ultimately resulting in tree mortality.
