Willow aphid

Systematic position. Chaitophorus is a genus of aphids within the family Aphididae, order Hemiptera. These insects are commonly known as willow aphids, though they target various species of the Salicaceae family. They are small, soft-bodied insects specialized in feeding on the sap of deciduous trees.

Host plants and damage. The primary hosts include species of Salix (willow), Populus (poplar), and Aspen. The aphids settle in large colonies on the undersides of leaves, tender shoots, and leaf stalks. Infested plants show signs of leaf curling, chlorosis, and premature senescence, which can severely stunt the growth of young trees.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle typically involves overwintering as eggs on the bark of host trees. In the spring, stem mothers hatch and establish new colonies. Throughout the summer, several generations of wingless and winged individuals are produced via parthenogenesis, leading to explosive population growth when environmental conditions are favorable.

Pest impact. The feeding activity causes significant physiological stress to the host tree. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers the leaf surface and obstructs photosynthesis. This combination of sap-sucking and secondary fungal growth can weaken trees, making them susceptible to other stressors.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling Chaitophorus. Chemical control involves the use of systemic insecticides during the early stages of infestation. Encouraging natural enemies like lady beetles, lacewings, and hoverflies is highly recommended as a sustainable way to maintain aphid populations below the economic injury level.
