Taxonomic position: The poplar leaf aphid (Chaitophorus leucomelas) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized insect that specifically targets trees belonging to the genus Populus, making it a significant pest in both forestry and urban arboriculture.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this species include various poplar varieties, such as black poplar, Canadian poplar, and Lombardy poplar. The pest is particularly aggressive towards young saplings in nurseries, but it also frequently infests mature trees, leading to widespread damage in parks and plantations.

Biology and life cycle: The aphid survives the winter in the egg stage, which is deposited in bark crevices or near buds. In the spring, stem mothers hatch and begin to colonize emerging leaves. Throughout the season, the aphid undergoes several generations of parthenogenetic reproduction, quickly leading to massive population densities on the underside of leaves.

Nature of damage and economic impact: The aphids feed on plant sap, causing leaves to curl, yellow, and drop prematurely. Furthermore, their honeydew secretions promote the growth of sooty mold, which severely hinders photosynthesis.
