Description
Systematic position. The species belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Aphididae, and the genus Chaitophorus. It is a specialized sap-sucking insect that has co-evolved with specific host trees within the Salicaceae family, particularly the Populus genus.
Host plants. The primary hosts for Chaitophorus psylloides are various species of poplar trees. These aphids are frequently encountered on black poplar and white poplar in urban environments, windbreaks, and commercial tree nurseries.
Biology and life cycle. The species exhibits a complex lifecycle typical for many aphids. Winter is passed in the egg stage, attached to the bark near buds. During spring, the fundatrices emerge, leading to several generations of asexual reproduction. Migration between trees is facilitated by the development of winged forms during the summer months.
