Description
Taxonomic position. The poplar aphid (Chaitophorus populicola) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized insect species that derives its nutrition almost exclusively from plants within the Populus genus, impacting both nurseries and established forest plantations.
Host plants and damage. This pest primarily attacks various species of poplar trees. Aphids aggregate in dense colonies on tender young shoots, leaf petioles, and the abaxial surface of leaves. This feeding activity causes curling, distortion, and premature yellowing of the foliage, significantly affecting the aesthetic and physiological state of the host.
Biology and life cycle. The species exhibits a complex life cycle characterized by parthenogenetic reproduction throughout the growing season. As autumn approaches, winged or wingless sexual forms emerge to mate and deposit overwintering eggs within the bark crevices of young twigs. The following spring, nymphs hatch and establish the first colonies of the new season.
Economic importance. The primary harm stems from nutrient depletion and the secretion of honeydew. This sugary waste facilitates the growth of sooty mold, which coats the leaf surface and hinders photosynthesis. Persistent infestations result in stunted growth, dieback of terminal shoots, and increased vulnerability of the tree to secondary infections or environmental stressors.
Control measures. Management strategies focus on early detection and targeted intervention. Chemical control using systemic insecticides is effective when applied before the aphid population peaks. Additionally, biological control is highly recommended, as natural predators like lady beetles (Coccinellidae), lacewings, and hoverfly larvae are often highly efficient at suppressing aphid outbreaks in natural habitats.
