Metallic wood-boring beetle

The genus Chalcophora belongs to the Buprestidae family, commonly known as metallic wood-boring beetles. These insects are characterized by their large, flattened, and elongated bodies which often display a brilliant metallic luster. As members of the jewel beetle family, they are widely recognized by foresters and entomologists alike.

These beetles primarily infest coniferous trees, with a strong preference for Pinus species. They often target weakened or stressed trees, although they can colonize healthy individuals if the beetle population density becomes high enough. They are considered significant pests in pine forests and commercial timber plantations.

The biological cycle of Chalcophora is complex and typically spans several years. Adults emerge in spring or summer to feed on foliage and mate. Females deposit eggs in bark crevices, and upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the inner bark and sapwood. The larvae spend their extended development period feeding and building galleries within the tree structure.

The damage caused by these beetles is extensive. The larval galleries effectively girdle the tree, disrupting the transport of water and nutrients from the roots to the crown. This leads to progressive crown thinning, foliage chlorosis, and eventually the death of the tree. Furthermore, the tunnels act as entry points for fungal pathogens and other secondary wood-boring insects.

Effective pest management involves integrated strategies. Cultural controls include the prompt removal and destruction of infested logs and dead wood to prevent the spread of the population. In managed forests or ornamental areas, chemical control with systematic insecticides during the adult flight period can be effective. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil management is also a critical preventative step.
