Sculptured pine borer

Chalcophora angulicollis

Description

Systematic position. The Sculptured pine borer (Chalcophora angulicollis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. It is a large wood-boring beetle that primarily targets coniferous species across North America. As a significant forest pest, it specializes in weakened or stressed trees within its natural range.

Target plants and damage. The pest attacks a variety of pines, including Ponderosa and White pine. While adults may feed on needles and twigs, the larvae are the primary cause of concern. Larvae bore deep into the inner bark and sapwood, creating extensive galleries that effectively girdle the tree, interrupting nutrient flow and leading to crown dieback and eventual tree mortality.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the Sculptured pine borer spans several years. Females deposit eggs into bark crevices, often selecting trees compromised by drought, fire, or physical trauma. Upon hatching, larvae feed on the cambium and xylem. Once mature, they pupate within the wood, and adult beetles emerge through distinctive oval-shaped exit holes.

Economic impact. The infestation leads to severe tree decline, which poses economic losses in both timber production and forest management. Trees attacked by the beetle often show signs of fading needles and overall structural weakness. Increased populations can trigger localized outbreaks, especially in areas where environmental stressors are prevalent, reducing the quality of available wood.

Control measures. Effective management depends on preventive silviculture and rapid intervention. Recommended strategies include:

  • removal and destruction of infested or declining trees to lower the population;
  • improving tree health through irrigation and appropriate site maintenance;
  • applying preventative insecticides on high-value trees during the peak flight season;
  • protecting native predators such as woodpeckers and parasitic wasps that help keep populations in check.
