Description

The large pine buprestid (Latin: Chalcophora fortis) is a significant wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Buprestidae. These beetles are among the largest in their family and are known for their distinct metallic appearance, which allows them to blend in with the bark of coniferous trees, their primary habitat.

The primary hosts for this species are trees within the Pinus genus. They often target stressed, declining, or old-growth trees, although significant outbreaks can occur in healthier forest stands during prolonged drought conditions, where the trees' natural defense mechanisms are significantly compromised.

The biological cycle of this pest is complex and often spans several years. Female beetles deposit eggs into bark crevices. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the inner bark and eventually into the sapwood. They create intricate galleries that disrupt the vascular tissue, which is essential for the tree's nutrient transport.

Damage caused by Chalcophora fortis is primarily attributed to the larval stage. As they feed under the bark, they leave behind characteristic flattened galleries filled with frass. The visual result of severe infestation includes branch dieback, yellowing of needles, and eventually, the death of the entire tree if the girdling is complete.
