Chalcophorella

Chalcophorella is a genus of jewel beetles belonging to the family Buprestidae within the order Coleoptera. These insects are well-known wood-boring pests that primarily target stressed or declining trees. The adult beetles are typically metallic in color, which helps them blend into the foliage, while their larvae are specialized for boring deep into the woody tissues of their hosts.

This pest is commonly found infesting various fruit trees, including apples, pears, and stone fruits, as well as several ornamental and forest tree species. They tend to attack trees that are already weakened by environmental factors, such as severe drought, poor soil quality, or physical damage to the trunk caused by improper pruning or gardening activities.

The life cycle of Chalcophorella includes four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults emerge during the warmer months, feeding on the leaves of host trees. Females lay eggs in bark crevices, and upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the bark to begin their destructive tunneling inside the trunk or branches. The larval stage can last for one or more seasons, depending on the climatic conditions.

The damage caused by these larvae is often internal and goes unnoticed until severe symptoms appear. As they tunnel through the cambium and wood, they disrupt the vascular system, preventing the transport of water and nutrients. Over time, this leads to branch dieback, thinning of the canopy, and eventually, if the infestation is severe, the death of the entire tree.

Effective management and control strategies include:

• Regular inspection of trunks for signs of tunneling or exit holes.
• Sanitation, including the removal and destruction of heavily infested limbs or trees.
• Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization programs.
• Applying systemic or contact insecticides during the adult flight period to reduce egg-laying populations.
