The field buprestid (Chalcophorella campestris) is a member of the Buprestidae family, commonly known as metallic wood-boring beetles. This species is recognized as a significant pest of various broad-leaved trees, with a particular affinity for fruit-bearing species in agricultural and domestic settings.
This pest primarily attacks stone fruit trees, including apricot, peach, plum, and cherry. In some cases, pome fruits like apple and pear can also be infested. The risk is highest for trees already stressed by drought, poor soil quality, or lack of proper pruning and fertilization, which makes them highly attractive to egg-laying females.
The life cycle of this beetle typically spans two years. Adults emerge during the summer months, feeding on foliage and tender bark. After mating, females deposit eggs into crevices in the bark of trunks and thick branches. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the inner bark and cambium, creating extensive, winding galleries that disrupt the vascular system of the tree.
The damage caused by the larvae is often fatal if not detected in time. Symptoms include wilting of individual branches, sparse leaf cover, and visible exit holes on the bark surface. Prolonged infestation results in the death of the tree due to the interruption of sap flow and overall structural weakening.
Management strategies focus on preventive measures. Orchardists should implement strict sanitary practices, such as the prompt removal and disposal of infested trees or branches. Maintaining tree vigor through irrigation and fertilization is crucial, as healthy trees can better tolerate pest pressure. Chemical control is limited to targeting adult beetles during their flight period using effective contact or systemic insecticides.
