Taxonomic position: Cheyletus eruditus, commonly known as the predatory mite, is a member of the order Trombidiformes and the family Cheyletidae. While often considered a beneficial predator of other mites and insects, its uncontrolled proliferation in storage facilities poses significant challenges for agricultural post-harvest management.

Crops affected: This species is primarily associated with storage environments, including grain elevators, warehouses, flour mills, and feed storage units. It inhabits various stored plant products, such as grains, cereal flour, bran, oilseeds, and dried fruits, where it seeks out prey while simultaneously contaminating the product.

Biology and life cycle: The mite's development consists of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Its life cycle is highly dependent on humidity and temperature; in favorable conditions, such as high moisture and moderate warmth, the population can grow rapidly, completing a generation in just a few weeks.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The primary harm is not direct feeding on the grain, but rather the contamination of stored goods with mite corpses, exuviae, and excrement. This organic debris lowers the grade of the grain, compromises its hygiene standards, and facilitates the growth of molds, which can lead to heating and further spoilage of the bulk material.

Protection measures: Effective management requires an integrated approach to storage maintenance and sanitation. Recommended strategies include:

• Strict moisture control, ensuring grain moisture remains below 14%.
• Regular cleaning and removal of dust, spilled grain, and debris from storage areas.
• Application of residual insecticides or fumigants when heavy infestations are detected.
