Description
Systematic position: The rice stalk borer (Chilo agamemnon) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Crambidae. It is a highly specialized pest that significantly impacts rice production in various tropical and subtropical regions of the world.
Host plants: The primary host for this species is rice (Oryza sativa). However, it is also known to infest other members of the Poaceae family, including sugarcane, maize, sorghum, and several wild grasses, which act as alternative reservoirs for the pest population.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit egg masses on the underside of leaves near the leaf sheath. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately seek entry points into the rice stem. They complete their development inside the stem, feeding on internal tissues, and then pupate within the larval gallery.
Damage and economic significance: The larvae cause direct damage by boring into the stems. This activity severs the vascular system, preventing nutrient flow to the panicle. The most visible symptom is 'deadheart' during the vegetative stage and 'whitehead' during the reproductive stage. These damaged panicles fail to produce grain, leading to severe yield losses if the infestation remains unmanaged.
Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control.
