Description

The Gold-fringed stem borer (Chilo auricilius) is a destructive insect species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is recognized as a major pest of various graminaceous crops, particularly causing severe damage to rice production throughout South and Southeast Asia.

This pest has a relatively wide host range among grasses. While rice is its primary target, it also infests sugarcane, maize, and sorghum. Its ability to adapt to different monocotyledonous crops makes it a persistent threat in agricultural landscapes where these crops are cultivated in rotation or proximity.

The life cycle of Chilo auricilius comprises the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The moths deposit egg masses on the foliage of host plants. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately migrate to the stems, boring into the interior tissues where they feed and develop, rendering them shielded from environmental stressors and many predators.

The damage caused by the larvae is multifaceted. Early infestation leads to the drying of the central shoot, commonly known as "dead hearts." If the infestation occurs during the reproductive stage, the larvae sever the developing panicle, resulting in "white heads"—empty, grainless heads that cause significant reductions in final crop yield.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control of this borer. Recommended strategies include:

  • Sanitation of fields by removing and destroying crop stubble where larvae hibernate.
  • Implementing crop rotation with non-host species to break the pest life cycle.
  • Deploying biological control agents like Trichogramma wasps to parasitize egg masses.
  • Targeted use of systemic insecticides during the critical window of larval entry.
  • Monitoring moth populations using light or pheromone traps to time interventions precisely.
