Description
The sugarcane shoot borer (Chilo infuscatellus) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is widely recognized as a devastating pest of sugarcane, particularly prevalent across South and Southeast Asia, capable of causing massive yield losses in intensive farming systems.
The primary host for this pest is sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum), though it is also known to infest alternative hosts like maize, sorghum, and various wild grasses. It thrives in hot and dry climates, making it a critical threat to agricultural production in regions where these conditions are consistent during the crop's establishment phase.
The life cycle involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Moths lay eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae crawl down the plant and bore into the base of the stem. The pest is highly reproductive, completing multiple generations per year, which allows populations to build up rapidly if left uncontrolled.
The damage is most severe in young plants, where the destruction of the growing point leads to the characteristic "dead heart" symptom, causing the death of the shoot. In older stalks, larval feeding tunnels into the pith, weakening the stem, reducing juice quality, and drastically lowering overall sucrose content and sugar recovery.
Management strategies focus on a multi-pronged approach:
- Removal and destruction of infested plant debris.
- Biological control using Trichogramma species.
- Timely application of systemic insecticides during the peak oviposition period.
- Early irrigation to promote robust plant growth and minimize susceptibility.
