Description

The Mexican rice borer (Chilo loftini) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. Originally native to parts of the Americas, this insect has become a significant threat to various agricultural industries due to its aggressive feeding habits on stem-boring host plants.

This pest primarily attacks sugarcane, rice, corn, and sorghum. It is known for its ability to infest both cultivated and wild grasses, making eradication difficult as wild populations serve as a constant reservoir for re-infesting agricultural fields throughout the growing season.

The life cycle begins with the female depositing eggs on the leaf surfaces of host plants. Upon hatching, larvae immediately bore into the stalk. This larval stage is the most destructive, as they remain protected inside the plant tissue while feeding on the pith and structural components of the stem for the duration of their development.

The damage caused by Chilo loftini involves systemic injury to the plant. Typical signs include deadhearts (wilting of the central leaf whorl), reduced sugar content in sugarcane, and increased susceptibility to lodging. The tunnels created by larvae also weaken the physical integrity of the crop and introduce pathogens, leading to secondary infections.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this pest. Recommended strategies include:

  • Using resistant or tolerant crop cultivars.
  • Managing irrigation to maintain plant health.
  • Destroying crop residues after harvest to disrupt the life cycle.
  • Releasing biological control agents like Cotesia flavipes.
  • Applying insecticides only when economic thresholds are met.
