Description

Systematic position. This species belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Crambidae. It is a well-known agricultural pest primarily found in sub-Saharan Africa, where it poses a significant threat to cereal production, particularly in maize-growing regions.

Host crops. The African maize stalk borer primarily infests maize (Zea mays). However, it is also a significant pest of sorghum and sugarcane. It can occasionally thrive on wild grasses, which act as alternative hosts, allowing the pest to survive throughout the year.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female moths deposit eggs in masses on the leaves of the host plant. Upon hatching, the larvae crawl into the leaf whorl and eventually bore into the stem, where they tunnel through the pith to complete their development.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The larvae cause severe physiological stress to the plant by disrupting the vascular system. Typical symptoms include "dead hearts" in young plants and tunneling in older stems, which weakens the stalk. Infestation leads to reduced yield, increased risk of lodging, and susceptibility to secondary fungal infections.

Management strategies. Effective control measures for this moth include several key tactics:

  • crop rotation and the destruction of crop residues post-harvest to reduce overwintering larvae;
  • the use of resistant or tolerant crop cultivars;
  • the deployment of pheromone traps for population monitoring;
