Description
The spotted stem borer (Chilo partellus) is a major agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. Originally native to Asia, it has become a serious invasive pest in various African countries, causing substantial economic losses in cereal production by attacking the stalks of host plants.
The primary hosts of this pest are maize and sorghum, but it also infests pearl millet, rice, and several wild grass species. The larvae are notorious for boring into the stems of these plants, which protects them from environmental stressors and many conventional contact-based chemical pesticide applications.
The life cycle of Chilo partellus consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females lay eggs in clusters on the leaves. Upon hatching, the young larvae migrate to the whorl and subsequently bore into the stem, where they feed and develop. The entire life cycle duration is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple generations during a single growing season.
Damage caused by the larvae manifests as "dead hearts" in young plants, where the central shoot withers and dies. In older plants, the larvae tunnel extensively through the stem tissue, causing structural weakness, stunted growth, and broken stalks. This disruption of the vascular system prevents proper nutrient translocation, ultimately leading to significant yield reductions.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as the destruction of crop residues after harvest are vital to reduce overwintering populations. Biocontrol programs utilizing parasitoids like Cotesia flavipes have shown success in various regions. Furthermore, the selection of resistant cultivars and the judicious timing of insecticides remain cornerstone strategies in modern agronomic practice.
