Description
Systematic position: The rice stalk borer (Chilo plejadellus) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Crambidae. It is a highly specialized pest known to cause economic damage to rice cultivation, particularly in regions with suitable humid climates.
Host plants and damage: The primary host for this species is rice. The larvae bore into the stalks, feeding on the internal tissues. This feeding behavior disrupts the vascular system, leading to the characteristic "dead heart" symptom, where the central shoot withers, or the "white head" symptom, where the panicle becomes empty and fails to produce grains.
Biology and lifecycle: The life cycle consists of the egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal, and adult moth stages. Female moths lay eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, larvae disperse and bore into the stem. Overwintering occurs as larvae within the stubble or debris remaining in the field after harvest.
Economic impact: Damage caused by Chilo plejadellus can be severe, leading to significant yield reductions. Beyond direct physical destruction of the stalks, the entry wounds created by larvae facilitate the infection of secondary pathogens, further compromising both the quantity and quality of the harvested rice.
