Description
The rice stem borer (Chilo polychrysus) is a significant pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is widely recognized as a serious threat to rice production, particularly in Southeast Asia, causing substantial yield losses due to its boring habits within the stems.
This pest specifically targets rice crops. The larvae bore into the stems, disrupting the plant's vascular system, which interferes with nutrient and water transport to the panicle. While primarily associated with rice, its presence significantly impacts agricultural productivity in regions where host plants are densely cultivated.
The life cycle of the insect consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female moth lays eggs in clusters on leaf blades. After hatching, the larvae migrate to the stem, where they bore inside and feed on the inner tissues. The speed of development is highly dependent on environmental humidity and ambient temperatures.
The primary symptom of infestation is the formation of "dead hearts" in young rice plants and "white heads" in plants nearing maturity. These damaged stalks often collapse, and the panicles become empty or produce shriveled, low-quality grains. The economic damage can be catastrophic if infestation levels are not monitored early.
