Description
The spotted stem borer (Chilo sacchariphagus) is a significant insect pest belonging to the Crambidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is primarily known as a devastating pest of sugarcane, causing substantial losses in agricultural yields in tropical regions across Africa, Asia, and the Indian Ocean islands.
While sugarcane is the main host plant, this species has been documented feeding on other poaceous crops such as maize, rice, and sorghum. The pest's ability to survive on a variety of wild grasses allows it to maintain populations even when primary commercial crops are not available, making long-term management a complex task for agronomists.
The lifecycle consists of four developmental stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult moth is nocturnal and typically deposits eggs in clusters on the leaves of the host plant. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately tunnel into the stalk, where they remain protected from environmental factors and most contact insecticides until they reach the pupal stage.
The damage caused by larvae is severe and direct. By boring into the stalks, the larvae disrupt the plant's vascular system, which hinders the transportation of water and nutrients. This results in stunted growth, increased stalk breakage, and a significant reduction in sucrose content. Infected plants often show characteristic symptoms, such as the drying of the central shoot, known as 'dead heart'.
