Description

The Chilo zacconius is a significant lepidopteran pest belonging to the Crambidae family. This species is recognized as a major threat to rice production, particularly in parts of West Africa and Asia. It is specialized to thrive in humid environments where irrigation practices provide a continuous habitat for the pest population to expand throughout the cropping season.

This pest primarily infests the rice plant (Oryza sativa), although it may occasionally affect other Poaceae species in the proximity of rice fields. The damage is exclusively caused by the larvae, which bore into the stems of the rice plants. This feeding habit disrupts the vascular tissues of the stem, effectively preventing nutrient transport to the developing grain heads.

The life cycle of Chilo zacconius consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. Adult moths are typically nocturnal and lay eggs in clusters on the leaves. The larvae move rapidly toward the stems upon hatching. The entire developmental period is sensitive to environmental conditions, with multiple overlapping generations often occurring in tropical climates throughout the year.

Typical symptoms of infestation include the presence of "dead hearts" during the vegetative stage and "white heads" at the reproductive stage. A white head is characterized by a straw-colored, empty panicle that stands upright because no grain has been filled. These symptoms are clear indicators of severe stem infestation, which can lead to substantial yield reductions if left uncontrolled.

Effective management strategies require an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. This includes the use of resistant rice cultivars, appropriate water management, and the destruction of rice stubble to remove overwintering larvae. Chemical control should be implemented based on economic injury levels using selective insecticides. Furthermore, encouraging natural parasitoids, such as Trichogramma species, can significantly reduce egg mass survival rates.
