Green stink bug

The green stink bug (Chinavia hilaris) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Pentatomidae family within the order Hemiptera. It is recognized for its polyphagous nature, meaning it feeds on a vast array of plant hosts, causing economic losses across various farming sectors globally.

This pest is particularly damaging to legumes, especially soybeans, as well as vegetables, cereal crops, and fruit-bearing trees. By piercing plant tissues with its specialized mouthparts, the bug extracts fluids, which causes substantial physiological stress to the host plant and interrupts the normal development of seeds and fruits.

The life cycle of the bug comprises the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid in clusters on the undersides of leaves. The duration of development is highly dependent on ambient temperature, which dictates how quickly the bug can complete its life cycle and potentially initiate multiple generations during the growing season.

The damage caused by Chinavia hilaris is often characterized by spotting, shriveling, or complete deformation of the fruits and pods. In soybean cultivation, the feeding activity leads to reduced seed quality, smaller yields, and potential susceptibility to secondary fungal or bacterial infections through the puncture wounds left by the insects.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that combines cultural, biological, and chemical methods. Cultural practices include the elimination of weed hosts that act as a reservoir for the bug population. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate insecticides during the nymphal stages, as they are typically more vulnerable than the heavily armored adults.
