Chlorophorus diadema

Chlorophorus diadema is a species of longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae) belonging to the order Coleoptera. This wood-boring insect is known for its ability to damage weakened or stressed plants. In agricultural settings, it is recognized as a pest capable of causing significant economic losses if not managed through proper sanitary practices.

The primary host for this pest is the grapevine. The larvae penetrate the bark and bore deep into the wood, creating extensive galleries. This feeding behavior disrupts the vascular system, significantly hindering the flow of water and nutrients throughout the vine, which eventually leads to the decline of the plant, reduced yields, and the death of permanent woody structures.

The life cycle of the beetle typically spans one to two years. Adults, which are active during the summer, feed on pollen and nectar from various flowers. After mating, the females deposit eggs into cracks in the bark or existing wounds on the vine. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin tunneling into the wood, where they remain throughout their development.

The damage caused by Chlorophorus diadema is difficult to detect early due to the internal nature of the infestation. Symptoms often appear late, including yellowing leaves, wilted shoots, and the sudden dieback of vine branches. By the time these symptoms become visible, the internal wood structure is usually heavily damaged by the larval galleries.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling this beetle. Recommended practices include:

• Pruning and destroying dead or heavily infested wood to eliminate larval habitats.
• Maintaining vine vigor through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization to increase resistance.
