Chrysobothris affinis

Chrysobothris affinis, commonly known as the flat-headed oak borer, is a destructive beetle species within the Buprestidae family (order Coleoptera). This wood-boring pest is widely distributed across Europe and parts of Asia, frequently causing severe damage to broad-leaved trees in both forest environments and cultivated orchards.

The pest is a polyphagous insect that targets various deciduous species. Primary hosts include oak, beech, lime, and birch trees. In agricultural settings, it is notorious for attacking fruit trees, including apples, pears, cherries, and plums. It is particularly drawn to stressed, weakened, or newly transplanted trees that lack sufficient vigor to repel infestation.

The life cycle of Chrysobothris affinis is closely linked to warm weather. Adults emerge between May and August, feeding on the bark of young shoots. Females deposit their eggs into crevices of the bark, typically on well-lit surfaces. Upon hatching, larvae bore directly into the cambium layer, where they excavate winding, flattened galleries filled with frass, often migrating into the sapwood as they mature.

The damage caused by this beetle is primarily mechanical and physiological. By feeding on the cambium and inner bark, the larvae sever the tree's vascular system, preventing the transport of water and nutrients. Symptoms include crown dieback, thinning foliage, and the presence of oval-shaped emergence holes on the trunk. Severe infestations frequently lead to the eventual death of the host tree.

Management and protection require a proactive approach. Key strategies include:

• Regular removal and destruction of infested, dead, or dying timber to reduce the local population.
• Maintaining optimal tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation.
• Applying contact insecticides to the trunk and main branches during peak adult emergence.
• Using mechanical barriers or trunk wraps on young trees to prevent egg-laying.
