Solier's buprestid (Chrysobothris solieri) is a species of beetle belonging to the Buprestidae family within the order Coleoptera. This wood-boring insect is recognized as a significant pest, particularly affecting coniferous forests and ornamental plantings. It primarily targets weakened or stressed trees, often exacerbating damage caused by environmental factors like drought or mechanical injuries.

The primary host plants for this species include various pine (Pinus) species. The beetle is well-adapted to surviving on trees that are already under physiological strain. By choosing host trees with compromised defenses, the beetle can rapidly establish its population, leading to progressive degradation of the tree's vascular system.

The life cycle of Chrysobothris solieri typically spans one to two years, depending on environmental temperature and host availability. Adult beetles emerge during the warmer months to feed on needles and young twigs before mating. Following this, females deposit eggs into bark crevices. The resulting larvae tunnel into the cambium layer, creating extensive galleries that effectively girdle the tree trunk.

Damage caused by this pest is characterized by localized tissue death and structural disruption of the tree's cambium. Signs of infestation include oval-shaped exit holes, patches of dead bark, and premature yellowing or necrosis of the crown. When left unchecked, the accumulation of larval galleries disrupts nutrient transport, ultimately leading to the decline and death of the host tree.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach for control. This includes strictly observing sanitary requirements, such as removing and destroying infested timber before the adults emerge. Protective measures also involve:

  • Maintaining optimal tree health through proper irrigation and soil management.
