Description
Systematic position. The pine borer beetle (Chrysobothris tranquebarica) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae, commonly known as jewel beetles. This species is a significant wood-boring pest that primarily targets conifer trees, causing extensive internal damage to the vascular tissues of the host plant.
Crops damaged. This pest primarily attacks various species within the Pinus genus. It is particularly drawn to stressed, damaged, or recently felled pine trees. While healthy trees have natural defenses such as resin flow to deter invaders, the beetle can successfully colonize trees weakened by drought, disease, or mechanical injury.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs on the bark surface, usually in cracks or crevices. Upon hatching, larvae burrow directly into the phloem and cambium layers. As they feed, they carve out winding galleries that disrupt the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients.
Damage patterns and harmfulness. The primary economic damage is caused by the larval stage. As the larvae feed beneath the bark, they create galleries that eventually girdle the tree, cutting off nutrient flow. This leads to foliage yellowing, branch dieback, and frequently, the total death of the tree. The presence of the beetle is often indicated by D-shaped exit holes on the trunk surface.
