Jewel beetle of the genus Chrysochroa

The genus Chrysochroa belongs to the Buprestidae family, within the order Coleoptera. Known as jewel beetles due to their brilliant, metallic colors, these insects are widely distributed across tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in Asia. As wood-boring pests, they pose a significant threat to various tree species in both natural forests and managed agricultural landscapes.

Chrysochroa beetles primarily infest broad-leaved and some coniferous trees. In agricultural and forestry settings, they are known to target stressed or weakened trees in orchards, nurseries, and urban environments. By attacking the tree's vital layers, they reduce overall vigor, cause branch dieback, and, in severe cases, lead to the complete death of the host plant.

The biological cycle of Chrysochroa involves a complete metamorphosis, consisting of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults are generally active during the warmer months, feeding on foliage and tender bark. Females deposit eggs into bark crevices, where the hatched larvae bore into the tree to begin their development, which often lasts for one or more years depending on the climate and species.

The damage caused by these beetles is primarily due to larval boring. As larvae chew through the cambium and xylem layers, they disrupt the transport of nutrients and water, leading to leaf yellowing, wilting, and tissue necrosis. External signs of infestation include exit holes in the bark, oozing of resin or sap, and a general decline in the tree's health, making it susceptible to secondary infections like fungi.

Management and control strategies require a preventive approach to ensure tree health. Essential practices include:

• Prompt removal and disposal of infested or dying trees to reduce the population.
• Maintaining proper irrigation and fertilization to keep trees resilient against attacks.
• Applying systemic insecticides during peak adult flight periods.
• Monitoring populations using pheromone or visual traps to time interventions correctly.
