Description
The Western cedar borer (Chrysophana placida) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the Buprestidae family. This species is native to North America and is well-known for its role as a pest in various conifer ecosystems, where it primarily affects trees that are already suffering from environmental stress.
The host range of Chrysophana placida typically includes various species of conifers, such as junipers, incense cedars, and other members of the Cupressaceae and Pinaceae families. While healthy trees are generally resistant, those weakened by drought, disease, or physical injury are significantly more susceptible to successful colonization.
The life cycle begins when adult females deposit eggs into crevices in the bark of suitable host trees. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the bark, constructing winding galleries. They feed extensively on the cambium layer and the inner bark. Once the larval development is complete, they pupate within the wood before emerging as adult beetles.
The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by the interruption of nutrient flow within the tree. As larvae create extensive galleries, they girdle the stems or branches, which often leads to dieback, stunted growth, and eventually tree death. The presence of these pests is often detected by fine wood dust or the emergence holes left on the bark.
Effective management strategies focus on prevention and sanitation. Owners should prioritize tree health by providing adequate irrigation during dry seasons and minimizing physical wounds to the bark. Infested trees should be promptly removed and destroyed to reduce the local population of the beetle. Insecticides may be used preventatively on highly valued ornamental trees during the adult flight season.
