Chrysoteuchia culmella, commonly known as the garden grass-veneer, is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. This insect is a widespread pest primarily found in grasslands, meadows, and agricultural fields throughout Europe, often impacting both forage grasses and various lawn species.

The larvae, or caterpillars, of this species feed on a variety of grass types. They are known to cause damage to turfgrasses, pastures, and some cereal crops. By feeding on the base of the stems and roots, they disrupt the plant's vascular system, which can lead to thinning of the vegetation and the formation of bare patches.

The life cycle typically involves one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in a cocoon within the thatch layer or the upper soil profile. In spring, they resume feeding, grow rapidly, and pupate. Adults emerge in late spring and summer, during which time they mate and females lay eggs on the leaves of host plants.

The damage is most visible during the larval stage. Caterpillars construct silken galleries near the soil surface, from which they emerge to graze on the grass blades. A severe infestation can lead to significant biomass loss, making the lawn or field susceptible to environmental stress and opportunistic weed encroachment.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Cultural practices include maintaining a healthy, dense turf through proper fertilization and watering, and mowing at appropriate heights to discourage egg-laying. In cases of high larval density, chemical control using targeted insecticides applied in the late summer can effectively reduce population levels for the following season.
