This species is a recognized agricultural pest, with its larval stage, widely known as the wireworm, posing a persistent challenge to crop productivity in many regions.

Host plants and damage: The species is polyphagous, affecting a broad range of crops including cereals, corn, sunflower, sugar beets, and various vegetable varieties. Wireworms feed on germinating seeds and roots, leading to plant stand thinning, stunted growth, and death of young seedlings. Extensive feeding can cause significant yield loss, especially in fields with high larval density.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of the hairy click beetle is multi-annual, typically spanning several years from egg to adult beetle. Larvae remain underground throughout their development, undergoing several molts. Adult beetles emerge in late spring or summer and are often found in vegetation, although the larval stage in the soil remains the primary focus for crop protection specialists.

Environmental factors: The distribution and severity of Cidnopus pilosus infestations are closely linked to soil characteristics and agricultural history. Preferred habitats include compacted, moist soils and land with high levels of organic matter or heavy weed infestation. The presence of rhizomatous weeds, such as couch grass, often acts as a reservoir for populations.
