Description

Clanis is a genus of large moths belonging to the family Sphingidae. Among its species, Clanis bilineata is particularly noted in agricultural science as a significant pest affecting leguminous crops, with a specific preference for soybean plants in various regions of Asia.

The primary host for this pest is soybean (Glycine max). The larvae feed voraciously on the foliage of the host plants, which can result in severe defoliation during the peak stages of the plant's vegetative growth, directly impacting the overall harvest yield.

The life cycle of the Clanis moth consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females typically deposit eggs on the underside of soybean leaves. After hatching, the larvae go through several larval instars, consuming large amounts of leaf tissue before descending to the soil to pupate at a depth of several centimeters.

Damage caused by this insect is characterized by the consumption of leaf blades, starting from the edges or creating irregular holes.
