Description

The Rice leaf folder (Cnaphalocrocis medinalis) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive pests affecting rice production in many tropical and subtropical regions of the world.

While rice is its primary host, the pest is also capable of feeding on other grasses such as corn, millet, and various weed species. The ability to utilize alternative hosts allows the population to persist in agricultural landscapes between rice cropping seasons.

The lifecycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths are nocturnal and typically lay eggs on the undersides of the leaves. Under favorable temperature and humidity conditions, the insect completes its development cycle rapidly, often resulting in several overlapping generations during the growing season.

The larvae are known for folding the leaves of rice plants longitudinally and securing the edges with silk threads. Within these protected chambers, they feed on the leaf tissue, leaving behind papery, white longitudinal stripes. This damage impairs photosynthesis, leading to reduced grain filling and significant yield losses if not managed.

  • Monitor fields regularly to detect early signs of leaf folding.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization that promotes lush vegetative growth.
  • Conserve natural predators and parasitoids, such as Trichogramma species.
