Cnidocampa (specifically Cnidocampa flavescens) is a notorious pest from the Limacodidae family, commonly known as the Oriental moth. This species is recognized for its stinging larvae, which pose significant risks to both various plants and humans who come into contact with them.

This pest is a polyphagous insect, meaning it feeds on a diverse range of host plants. It is particularly devastating to fruit trees, including apple, pear, plum, apricot, and peach. Furthermore, it frequently infests deciduous ornamental trees such as oak, maple, linden, and willow, creating challenges for pest management in both commercial orchards and residential landscapes.

The life cycle of the Cnidocampa typically consists of one generation per year. The insect overwinters as a mature larva inside a sturdy, spherical, parchment-like cocoon firmly attached to the twigs of its host plant. Pupation occurs in the spring, followed by the emergence of adults in the summer, which then lay eggs on the undersides of leaves.

Damage caused by the larvae is distinct and destructive. Young larvae feed on the leaf epidermis, while older larvae consume the entire leaf lamina, often leaving only the main veins. A critical biological feature is the presence of urticating hairs on the larvae, which secrete a toxin upon contact with skin, causing intense pain, swelling, and dermatitis in humans.

Effective management and control strategies are essential to prevent outbreaks. Recommended practices include:
