Pointed Snail

The Pointed Snail (Cochlicella barbara) is a terrestrial gastropod mollusc belonging to the family Geomitridae, order Stylommatophora. This pest is characterized by its small, elongated, conical shell. It is a significant agricultural threat, particularly in Mediterranean-type climates, where it can reach high population densities and impact large tracts of land.

This snail species feeds on a wide range of agricultural crops. It is particularly notorious for damaging cereal crops like wheat and barley, pulses, oilseeds such as canola, and various vegetables. Seedlings are especially susceptible to grazing, which can lead to significant crop thinning or complete stand failure during the early growth stages.

The biology of Cochlicella barbara is dictated by humidity and temperature. During dry summer months, the snails undergo aestivation, climbing up stems of plants or fence posts to avoid high soil temperatures. As soon as autumn rains arrive, they become active, feeding and reproducing. Eggs are deposited in soil cracks, ensuring the next generation is ready for the upcoming season.

Damage is caused by the snails scraping leaf tissue and stems with their radula. This activity leaves characteristic holes and shredded plant tissue. Beyond the direct damage to biomass, the presence of these snails during the harvest process is highly problematic, as they can clog harvesting machinery and lead to the contamination of grain shipments with snail debris.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. The use of molluscicide baits based on metaldehyde or iron phosphate is the primary chemical solution. Agronomic strategies are equally important and include:

• Stubble management to reduce resting sites during summer.
• Deep tillage to bury snails and disturb egg-laying sites.
• Crop rotation to minimize the accumulation of snail populations.
• Burning or mulching of crop residues to reduce the availability of shelter.
