Conical snail

The conical snail (Cochlicella conoidea) is a species of terrestrial gastropod mollusc belonging to the family Geomitridae. It is recognized by its distinctive elongated, cone-shaped shell. Originally from the Mediterranean region, this snail has become a significant agricultural pest in various parts of the world, particularly in regions practicing no-till or reduced-tillage agriculture where crop residues provide shelter.

This pest is known to damage a wide variety of crops, including cereals (wheat, barley), oilseeds, and legumes. The snails are particularly destructive to young seedlings, where they consume foliage, leading to reduced plant stand and stunted growth. In severe cases, the entire crop can be compromised, leading to significant economic losses for the farmer.

The biological cycle of the conical snail is strongly influenced by environmental moisture. They are most active during moist, cool weather when they feed and reproduce. During hot, dry summer months, they undergo aestivation, attaching themselves to stalks or fences to avoid desiccation. This behavior allows them to survive extreme temperatures until conditions become favorable for their activity again.

The economic impact is twofold: direct damage to plant tissue and the contamination of harvested grain. The presence of these snails in grain consignments can lead to price discounts, rejection of the produce, or the need for expensive post-harvest cleaning processes. Furthermore, their presence on plant surfaces can interfere with photosynthesis and facilitate the spread of various plant diseases.

Effective management strategies for controlling the conical snail include:

• Stubble management through burning or heavy cultivation to destroy snail habitats.
• Using mechanical harvesters equipped with specialized cleaning devices to separate snails from grain.
• Application of bait-based molluscicides during periods of peak activity, usually in autumn or spring.
• Crop rotation with non-host species to break the life cycle of the mollusc population.
