Slug caterpillars

Slug caterpillars (genus Cochlidion, family Limacodidae) are a distinct group of lepidopteran larvae known for their peculiar, slug-like appearance. Unlike most caterpillars, they lack well-developed prolegs and move with a gliding motion, making them one of the most visually unique pests found in agricultural ecosystems.

These pests primarily affect a variety of woody plants and fruit trees. Among the most common hosts are apple, pear, and various ornamental trees. While rarely causing total crop destruction, their presence significantly impacts the health and aesthetic value of the plants by reducing the functional leaf area, which is vital for fruit development and storage of nutrients for the next season.

The biology of Cochlidion is characterized by a sedentary larval stage. After hatching, the larvae stay relatively localized on the host plant. The lifecycle typically consists of one or two generations per year. The overwintering stage is particularly notable, as the insects form hard, spherical or oval cocoons attached directly to the bark or branches, providing significant protection from environmental stress and predators.

The damage caused by these insects is distinct. Initially, larvae perform epidermal feeding, resulting in semi-transparent patches on the leaves. As they mature, they proceed to consume larger portions of the leaf tissue. It is crucial for agronomists to note that the spines on many slug caterpillars are urticating, meaning they can cause painful skin irritation upon contact, necessitating the use of gloves and protective clothing during scouting.

Effective management strategies should be focused on early detection and physical removal where possible. In commercial orchards, if economic thresholds are reached, targeted insecticide applications during the early larval instar stages are most effective. Biological control using Bacillus thuringiensis or parasitic wasps can also be integrated into an IPM (Integrated Pest Management) program to keep populations below damaging levels without disrupting the wider ecological balance.
