Broad-horned casebearer

The Broad-horned casebearer (Coleophora laticornella) belongs to the family Coleophoridae within the order Lepidoptera. This insect is primarily recognized as a pest in orchards, where its larvae feed on foliage and buds while living inside a protective portable case constructed from silk and bits of plant tissue.

The main host crops for this pest are members of the Rosaceae family, specifically apple, pear, cherry, and plum trees. While it is often considered a minor pest, high population densities can lead to significant economic damage in commercial orchards if left unmonitored. Its stealthy behavior allows it to avoid detection until foliage damage becomes visible.

The life cycle of Coleophora laticornella is synchronized with the phenology of its host plants. Overwintering occurs in the larval stage inside hardened cases attached to bark or twigs. As soon as temperatures rise and buds begin to swell in spring, the larvae migrate to feed on the tender buds and young leaves. Pupation typically occurs later in the season on the underside of leaves.

Damage is characterized by the consumption of internal leaf tissues, leaving the outer cuticle intact, which results in necrotic spots and premature leaf drop. Young larvae cause most of the damage by mining the leaves, while later instars may damage developing fruit buds. This feeding activity weakens the overall vigor of the tree and can cause reduced fruit size or yield loss.

Effective control strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key methods include:

• Dormant oil sprays applied in late winter to disrupt overwintering larvae.
• Targeted insecticide applications during the early spring bud-burst phase when larvae are most active.
• Physical removal and destruction of infested twigs during pruning.
• Monitoring adult moth activity using pheromone traps to time insecticide applications accurately.

Maintaining a healthy orchard environment through proper irrigation and pruning helps trees withstand pest pressure. In severe cases, the use of biological agents or selective systemic insecticides is recommended to minimize the impact of the pest while preserving beneficial predatory insects.
