Description
The birch case-bearer moth (Coleophora serratella) is a member of the order Lepidoptera, belonging to the family Coleophoridae. This species is recognized as a significant pest, primarily impacting birch forests and ornamental tree plantings across temperate regions.
The host range of the birch case-bearer is concentrated on species of the genus Betula, but it also frequently colonizes alder (Alnus) and hornbeam (Carpinus). Under outbreak conditions, the larvae can cause severe defoliation, which negatively affects the overall health and vitality of the infested trees.
The life cycle of this moth is univoltine, meaning it completes one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in small, cigar-shaped cases constructed from leaf tissue and silk, typically attached to the tree bark. Upon spring arrival, they resume feeding on developing buds and young leaves.
