Clover casebearer moth

The clover casebearer moth (Coleophora spissicornis) is a specialized pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Coleophoridae. It is recognized as a significant pest in agricultural settings, particularly affecting clover crops grown for seed production, where it can cause substantial yield reduction if not managed correctly.

The host plants for this species primarily include various types of clover (Trifolium spp.). The larvae are known to feed on the reproductive parts of the plant, specifically targeting buds and flowers. By consuming the inner contents of these structures, the larvae effectively prevent proper fertilization and seed development, leading to significant economic losses for farmers.

Regarding its life cycle, Coleophora spissicornis typically completes one generation per year. The larvae overwinter inside protective, silk-based cases attached to plant stems or debris. As spring temperatures rise, the larvae emerge from diapause, resume feeding on fresh vegetation, and eventually pupate during the summer months before adult moths emerge to mate and lay eggs.

The damage caused by this moth is characterized by the presence of small, hollowed-out buds and the visible presence of the distinctive larval cases. Infested flowers fail to mature, resulting in withered heads and a lack of viable seed production. High levels of infestation can drastically reduce the commercial value of seed crops due to the destruction of the reproductive organs.
